Chinese Men Blacklisted For Refusing Military Service

The Chinese authorities have announced that they are punishing seventeen men who refused to finish their compulsory period of military service.

Officials from the city of Jilin have stated that the men, in their teens and early twenties, have been banned from doing a number of things in the country.

They can no longer take government jobs or go to university, as well as leave the country, board flights, use high-speed trains and stay in hotels.

They will also be restricted when it comes to buying a house and taking out loans. 

It is all part of the social credit system that rewards and punishes Chinese citizens for a range of things. 

Citizens can be denied access to a range of services and jobs if they upset authorities and negative scores will stay with them for at least 5 years. 

The statement released by Chinese authorities reads:

“[The men] were unwilling to enter military service.

“They have applied to leave the force after they were unable to adapt to the military training and lifestyle.

“The army, military service organisations and their parents have repeatedly counselled them but to no avail.

"They were dismissed by the army for refusing to serve”.

Military service is compulsory in China for men aged between 18 and 22, although it is frequently not enforced due to large numbers enlisting on a voluntary basis.

Chinese citizens usually also take part in one-month training sessions after finishing high school and before starting university.
