Dogs and decor: What do relaxed rules in military accommodation mean for families?
Coming home to a wagging tail, walls filled with cherished pictures – these are important comforts that can transform military housing into more welcoming spaces.
Now, the Ministry of Defence is making it easier for Armed Forces families to access these small but significant freedoms.
Under the new Consumer Charter, the government says it is cutting the red tape that has previously restricted families from keeping multiple pets or running businesses from home – but what do these changes actually mean in practice?
Wall decals are in – but there's no word on painting
The MOD says families will have more freedom to decorate their homes – but the examples given are things like adding wireless wall lamps and wall stickers.
That suggests painting walls or making bigger changes still won't be allowed, at least for now.
There's no confirmed timeline – only that more detail will come "in due course".
Running a business is more remote-friendly
BFBS Forces News understands applications to run businesses from military homes will now go straight to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, rather than being handled first by local unit commanders – where they could potentially be blocked.
The aim is a more consistent approach nationwide, and fewer problems when families have to move.
People already running a business from military accommodation will also now have access to a named housing officer, who can offer personalised support and guidance on any issues.
Streamlined approach for pets
Families living in service housing can keep up to two dogs, cats or smaller pets without the historic approval process.
This recognises the role pets play in family life and wellbeing – especially when a partner or parent is away on deployment.
The measures were welcomed by Minister for Veterans and People Al Carns, who said: "As a dog owner and Royal Marine who served for 24 years, much of it in service accommodation, I'm delighted to be making it easier for our dedicated personnel to own family pets."
