Over 100 escaped prisoners have been captured after they escaped prison on the British Virgin Islands following damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

The governor of the islands made the announcement following an operation run by the Royal Marines, British Virgin and Cayman Island Police, and British police.

Governor Gus Jaspert said in a statement:

"The government of the British Virgin Islands is extremely grateful to the police and military personnel for their tireless efforts, which have resulted in a thorough and extremely successful operation."

"I extend our gratitude to the UK and Cayman Island governments for their provision of personnel on the ground here, helping to ensure the safety and security of all British Virgin Islanders.

"This signals a huge step in all of our efforts to rebuild this fantastic territory."

Residents on the British Virgin Islands had previously said that they were "terrified" of the escapees and that looting had been "terrible"- claiming that a rape had been committed whilst they were on the loose.
