An Italian Air Force Eurofighter jet crashed into the sea at an air show near Terracina, killing its pilot on Sunday.

The air force said the body of the pilot, Capt. Gabriele Orlandi (36), was recovered soon after.

The tragic accident was being watched by the pilot’s parents and girlfriend.

Captain Gabriele Orlandi, 36, had over a decade of flying experience, was attempting a loop-the-loop as part of the air show, held just south of Rome.

But the £75 million Eurofighter collided with the water just a few hundred yards from the shore.

The pilot was killed on impact, and his body recovered later by navy divers.

In the aftermath of the crash, the pilot’s girlfriend was taken to a hospital to be treated for severe shock.

Italian Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti and Italian Air Force Chief of Staff General Claudi Graziano have both taken to social media to express condolences to the airman’s family.

Roberta Pinotti’s wrote: "Captain Gabriele Orlandi's family has the support of all the defence staff and my staff.

“I'm close to the Air Force, who live this sad moment of mourning shared by all the armed forces.”

A message on the Terracina Air Show Facebook page said: “To the family and to the Air Force, our most heartfelt condolences.”

An investigation has been opened to discover the cause of the crash.

The rest of the Terracina Air Show was canceled.
