Ex-US Airman Named As Texas Shooter As Trump Calls Him 'Deranged'

Law enforcement officials in the United States are searching for a motive after a former US serviceman killed 26 people and left 20 others wounded at a church service in Texas.

It’s the worst mass shooting in the history of the state.

Police had identified the gunman as a "young, white male", but US media have named him as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley.

A news conference was told, the suspect, dressed in black tactical gear and a ballistic vest, drove up to the First Baptist Church in the small town of Sutherland Springs during Sunday morning services and started shooting at worshippers.

The victims ranged in age from 5 to 72.

The gunman was later found dead, apparently of a gunshot wound, after he fled the scene.

US President Donald Trump said he was "a very deranged individual" and denied that guns were to blame for the shooting.

A US Air Force spokeswoman said Kelley had served in its Logistics Readiness unit at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge.

He was discharged in 2014 following a court-martial for assaulting his wife and child.

The Texas shooting comes just four weeks after a sniper killed 58 people at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

To honour the victims of this latest attack, President Trump has ordered flags on all federal buildings to be flown at half-mast.
