A criminal investigation is underway in Cyprus after an explosion outside a police station in the British-controlled Sovereign Base Area (SBA) of Dhekelia.
An SBA Police Officer suffered a 'very minor injury' in the incident, which took place early this morning.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman told Forces News:
"In Dhekelia station personnel may see some enhanced security measures. People should not be unduly alarmed and should continue with their normal daily routine."
"All personnel should remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the SBA Police via the normal channels."
SBA Police are now investigating the incident as a criminal matter but terrorism has not been ruled out.
The incident has, however, been described as a 'serious' one.
The MoD said in a statement:
"[We] can confirm that the SBA Police are investigating an explosive incident that happened in the early hours of this morning at the Dhekelia Police Station in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area."
"At this stage, the police are treating this as a criminal investigation. Until the initial investigation has concluded we will not be in a position to make any further comment."
