Lord Guthrie, 79, who is Colonel of the Life Guards, was "receiving medical attention" and "being well looked after" the MoD said on Saturday. 

The incident took place close the Victoria Memorial, at the top of the Mall, in front of dozens of people waiting to watch the fly past and appearance of the Royal Family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Numerous people wished the decorated commander a speedy recovery on social media, including Air Force veteran John Nichol.

Former SAS commander, whose full name is Charles Ronald Llewelyn Guthrie, was Chief of the General Staff until 1997 and then Chief of Defence Staff until 2001.

During his military career he was closely involved in military operations in Northern Ireland and provided advice to the British Government during the Bosnian War.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old woman was arrested for a public order offence after an item was thrown towards a procession at Trooping the Colour, Scotland Yard said.

The woman is currently in custody at a central London police station.
