Guthrie Fall

A former head of the armed forces is in hospital after falling from his horse following the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Field Marshal Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank received "prompt" medical attention and is now being looked after in hospital, an Army spokesman said.

Details about his condition have not been released.

The 79-year-old appeared to slump back on his horse near the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace.

As the horse turned round in circles,  Lord Guthrie slipped from the saddle head first to the ground.

Police officers rushed to help the former Chief of Defence Staff, closely followed by paramedics.

Lord Guthrie was then rushed to hospital.

An Army spokesman said: "Field Marshal The Lord Guthrie, Colonel The Life Guards, fell from his horse during the parade.

"He received prompt medical attention and is now being cared for in hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery."

The former SAS commander, whose full name is Charles Ronald Llewelyn Guthrie, was Chief of the General Staff until 1997 and then Chief of Defence Staff until 2001.

During his military career he was closely involved in military operations in Northern Ireland and provided advice to the British Government during the Bosnian War.
