Flower Power - Kids Go On Military Gardening Boot Camp

Troops from the Royal Logistic Corps have enlisted the help of school children to turn old army boots into flower pots.

It's all part of an initiative which not only builds ties with the community but will also result in a new Regimental Garden.

In the centre of Dishforth camp stands a couple of old flag poles and an empty forgotten plinth – left behind by the last regiment.

6 Regiment RLC have got some enthusiastic young gardeners in to help them sort it out by creating flowery military boots

The project is part of a wider move to get military communities gardening. The Royal Horticultural Society have been helping out, even running transportable garden workshops for personnel and their families.

As well as finding out about flowers, the children have also been learning about what their army neighbours do.

There was chance to climb on trucks, and try out a few command tasks.

The children now have 3 months to get creative with their boots which will be entered into the RHS Harlow Carr Flower Show in June before being returned to form part of the regimental garden.
