Gavin Williamson Visits Estonia Amid Rising Russia Tensions

Gavin Williamson in Estonia

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has discussed the increasing threat posed by Russia whilst on a visit to Estonia.

He has met with British personnel from the NATO battle group stationed at Tapa Army group, where he said that the world was united behind Britain over the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Salisbury.

Speaking to military personnel comprising the NATO battle group stationed in Estonia, he said:

"What President Putin wishes to do is to divide Britain from its allies to say that we stand alone.

"The fact that right across the NATO alliance, right across the European Union, nations have stood up in support of the United Kingdom ... I actually think that is the very best response that we could have."

The core of the Estonia battle group is currently made up of 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh, who have been stationed there since October last year.

During the course of his visit, lasting two days, Gavin Williamson will meet with President Kersti Kalijulaid, Prime Minister Juri Ratas and Estonian Minister of Defence Juri Luik.
