Internet Cancellation Fees For Armed Forces Personnel Scrapped

Armed Forces Won't Have To Pay Internet Cancellation Fees

Armed Forces personnel will no longer be charged for broadband and media packages' cancellation fees when deployed, the Defence Minister has announced.

The change comes into force immediately and will include the UK's biggest broadband providers, including BT, Sky, EE, Plusnet, Talk Talk and Virgin Media.

The new norm will benefit tens of thousands of Forces households.

Mark Lancaster said this is a step forward to making sure servicemen and women are "treated fairly":

"Our Armed Forces are sent all over the world and across the country to help keep our country safe and they should never be at a disadvantage because of this. (...) It’s a welcome move and we’re looking forward to seeing what more British businesses can do to support our military."

The move is part of the Armed Forces Covenant, a commitment by the UK to treat Armed Forces personnel fairly and not penalise them for their service.

Up until now, members of the Armed Forces who are moved to a different location could have to pay a cancellation fee.

Last year, the UK’s largest insurers and brokers allowed personnel and their families posted abroad to keep their No Claims Bonus for up to three years, and also waived cancellation fees.
