Man Bailed In Former Navy Officer Murder Investigation

Mike Samwell

Police have bailed a man arrested over the murder of a former Royal Navy officer run over by burglars who stole his car.

The 21-year-old suspect was held on suspicion of murder on Monday following the killing of Mike Samwell (pictured above), 35, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Samwell had confronted intruders after a break-in as he slept at his home in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester.

He had heard a loud bang and gone downstairs and outside to the parking space at the back of the house.

He was then run down by thieves who had stolen his Audi S3 sports car.

Mr Samwell's wife screamed for help as neighbours dashed to the scene and called for an ambulance.

He died just over an hour later in hospital.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick from Greater Manchester Police (GMP)'s Serious Crime Division previously described Mr Samwell's death as a "senseless murder".

A manhunt is on for the suspects, GMP said.
