Meet The MPs With Military Careers

Johnny Mercer

Johnny Mercer MP, Plymouth Moor View (CON)

The Defence Select Committee member and former Army captain held his seat, one he has held since May 2015.

He graduated from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2002, spending the following 11 years serving.

Previously, Mr Mercer has consistently voted for replacing Trident with a new nuclear weapons system.

He also consistently voted in favour of military action against so-called Islamic State.

Clive Lewis MP, Norwich South, (LAB)

The former infantry officer with 7 RIFLES doubled his majority in Norwich South, taking 61% of the vote.

He served as Shadow Defence Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn in 2016 from June until October that year, until being succeeded by current Shadow Defence Secretary, Nia Griffith.

Mr Lewis served as an infantry officer after passing out of Sandhurst in 2006.

He completed a three-month tour of Afghanistan in 2009.

Royston Smith MP, Southampton Itchen (CON)

The former Royal Air Force engineer held the seat he won in May 2015, winning by 31 votes.

During his military career, Mr Smith flew Nimrod aircraft, before leaving for a career with a commercial airline.

In November 2012, he was awarded the George Medal for bravery during an incident on HMS Astute, where he overpowered a serviceman who shot a crewman dead.

Previously, he has consistently voted in favour of upgrading Trident, and consistently against investigations into the Iraq war.

Andrew Bowie MP, Aberdeenshire West & Kincardine, (CON)

The former Royal Navy officer won the seat taking 47.9% of the vote.

The newly-elected MP’s education includes time studying at Britannia Royal Naval College.

Adam Holloway MP, Gravesham (CON)

The ex-Grenadier Guards captain held on to his seat, which he has held since May 2005, with 55.6% of the vote.

After graduating from Sandhurst, he served in Iraq during the Gulf War, and as an armoured platoon commander in Cold War Germany.

For four years until 2010, Mr Holloway sat on the Defence Selection Committee.

He has almost always voted in favour of upgrading the UK’s Trident deterrent, and generally for investigations into the Iraq war.
