A Memorial Receives A Makeover After Sea Salt Damage

Atop a cliff in Folkestone, overlooking the Channel stands The National Memorial to The Few, where much of the battle took place.

Over the decades, the stone at the bottom of the statue had started to look worse for wear.

But it’s now been given a transformation.

Squadron badges, belonging to those who died in the battle, have been carved into black granite.

It is hoped that this memorial will last much longer and withstand the spray from the channel, as lasting forever is exactly what the veterans would've wanted.

Alongside the unveiling of the revamped memorial, the Hunting Lodge building was also reopened after some much-needed refurbishments.

The lodge was the site’s original visitor centre and was opened by Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, in 2015.

It has now reopened as a library and resource centre after major building work.

It will be available to academics, researchers and others who wish to access the Trust’s extensive library of Battle of Britain-themed material.
