Motorist Who Killed RAF Afghanistan Veteran Jailed

A motorist has been jailed for causing the death of a former British serviceman.

Lance Corporal Chris Pollitt was killed in June 2015 when his car was hit by a vehicle driven by Cinzia Marson, 34.

Pollitt served in two tours of Afghanistan with the RAF Regiment and had moved to Canada after finding love.

He worked as a security officer there and was in the process of responding to an alarm at a school when Marson's car ploughed into him near Beiseker, Alberta.

Marson, a single mother, was convicted of causing the 31-year-old's death by dangerous driving on Wednesday.

She had ignored a number of warning signs, including rumbles strips and a stop sign, when the collision occurred.

As a result, Marson crashed head on into Pollitt's Hyundai Elantra with her Lincoln SUV.

Pollitt's family attended Marson’s sentencing, which included a five-year driving ban.

The judge carrying out the sentencing, Justice Hughes, said that the reasons behind Marson's failure to stop were not clear, but that her actions had clearly been dangerous.

Chris' father, Stuart Pollitt, told the court of the agony his family had endured in the wake of their son's death.

Reacting to the sentence, he said:

"We are just so grateful to have got 20 months. There was a period there where we thought she might get probation or weekends only and that would have just finished us off so we are just so very grateful."

Chris' sister Katie Pollitt read a statement outside the courtroom, saying:

"Chris was an asset to every society he entered. He touched the lives of so many people and left an imprint on their hearts.

"No length of sentence will ever bring Chris back but a custodial jail term of 20 months brings us some comfort."

"We and many others will miss him forever."

Since Chris' death, the family have set up a GoFundMe page in the hope of assisting his fiancée, Megan, in pursuing her dream to become a paramedic.
