Navy Bids Farewell To HMS Torbay
Submariners have been parading through the streets of Torquay to hand back the Honorary Freedom of Torbay.
The town’s namesake submarine, HMS Torbay, was decommissioned last week.
In order to mark the end of its life in the fleet, the ship’s company marched through Torquay for the final time.
Until now Torbay’s crew held the freedom of the seaside resort.
But as the boat reaches the end of her life, the company are no longer holders of the freedom, and they asked permission to march the streets one last time.
Torbay, a nuclear powered hunter killer submarine, has been in service for 32 years, but now the parade has marked the end of her life.
Whilst HMS Torbay may be no more, with four previous boats bearing her name, it's hoped that it’s only a matter of time before she has a link with the senior service once again.
