New Military TV Drama Set In Aden During The Sizzling Sixties

The Last Post BBC1 210917

New drama, The Last Post, will be hitting our screens at the beginning of next month.

Created by BAFTA winning playwright, Peter Moffat, The Last Post is a close up view of army life set in the heat, glamour and extreme danger of Aden in the 1960's.

Peter Moffatt, who has previously created series such as Criminal Justice and Silk, based this new story on his childhood memories.

His father was an officer in the Royal Military Police and his mother, the devoted wife, struggled between being what the army required her to be and what she felt like being.

Peter had always believed this was a perfect storyline and setting for a drama:

"“Young married couples in the heart of the Sixties living in extremely close proximity in a very alien and dangerous environment has always struck me as ripe territory for drama."

Set in Aden, Yemen, the story centres on a unit of Royal Military Police and their families.

The men face constant insurgency and threat, yet life and love must go on.

Producer, Mark Pybus, believes the audience will fall in love with the new series because of the characters it features:

"At its core The Last Post is a drama about ordinary people – soldiers, wives, and families – living in an extraordinary place at an extraordinary time."

The cast is made up of familiar faces; Jessie Buckley (War and Peace), Jessica Raine‎ (Call The Midwife), Amanda Drew (Broadchurch), Ben Miles (The Crown) and Stephen Campbell Moore (History Boys)‎ play the military families the drama centres around.

You may also recognise the likes of Tom Glynn-Carney (Dunkirk), Chris Reilly (Call the Midwife) and Essie Davis (The White Princess).

The six-part series starts on October 1st at 9 o'clock BBC One.
