New submarine facility will maintain nuclear deterrence and national security, says minister

A new, state-of-the-art submarine facility has been opened in Bristol, helping sustain the UK's nuclear deterrent and create 100 new jobs, the government says.
Defence Procurement Minister Maria Eagle opened the Submarine Availability Support Hub (SASH) and said it demonstrates the government's commitment to national security.
SASH is expected to improve submarine delivery and boost UK engineering capabilities.
It is also expected to help the Defence Nuclear Enterprise – the organisations that operate, maintain, renew, and sustain the UK's nuclear deterrent – work more seamlessly with contractors, increasing submarine availability and delivery.
The facility contributes to the 42,000 jobs and supports a supply chain of 3,000 businesses already involved in the at-sea nuclear deterrent effort.
It will also provide apprenticeships, to help discover and develop future talent, and has a collaborative learning space – with advanced digital and learning tools.
"It was a privilege to open the new Babcock Submarine Availability Support Hub in Bristol and to have the opportunity to speak with civilian colleagues and Navy personnel alike," Ms Eagle said.
"The investment in this new facility is another demonstration of the government's commitment to making defence an engine for growth.

"This brand-new facility will benefit the UK's nuclear deterrent, which safeguards our security, and bolsters our country's prosperity."
Submarine Delivery Agency, CEO Sir Chris Gardner, said the investment will increase the number of waterfront operations.
"The opening of the Submarine Availability Support Hub in Bristol provides a collaborative space that will support submarine availability for the Royal Navy in defence of our nation.
"This innovative facility is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to the UK’s nuclear enterprise.
"The activity taking place within the SASH enables waterfront operations at Clyde and Devonport by improving the content, planning and preparation for maintenance periods as part of an integrated Naval Nuclear business to support submarine availability."
