No point sitting on kit and seeing Ukraine overrun, new Defence Secretary says

Watch: Grant Shapps speaks to Forces News for the first time as Defence Secretary.

Grant Shapps has told Forces News there is no point sitting on kit and seeing Ukraine overrun, emphasising the importance of replenishing stock levels of equipment the UK has sent to the war-torn country.

Speaking to Forces News for the first time since taking over from Ben Wallace in the role, he praised the UK's "remarkable training" of Ukrainians to defend their homeland from Russian invasion.

He said Vladimir Putin has "fundamentally miscalculated" his invasion and Mr Shapps emphasised the need for the UK to keep trying to "lead the charge" in providing equipment to Ukraine.

The Defence Secretary warned: "We know what happens if you don't stop a tyrant."

His full interview with reporter Tom Sables is featured in the video above.
