Party Leaders Clash Over Brexit As Parliament Dissolves

The Prime Minister has been to see the Queen – to mark the dissolution of parliament, and the formal start of the General Election campaign.

While ministers, including those in-charge of defence, stay in post as of midnight there are now no MPs. 

It’s less than a year since Theresa May first made the journey to Buckingham Palace when she was invited by the Queen to become Prime Minister.

Despite originally insisting there would be no early General Election she went again formal approval from the monarch of a public vote.

The head of state and head of government spent half an hour together before Mrs May headed back to Downing Street.

The Conservative’s first election poster took a swipe at Labour’s leader on defence, although this campaign message was actually focussing on tax.

Prime Minister May said outside Downing Street:

"While there is enormous opportunity for Britain as we leave the European Union – if we do not get this right the consequences will be serious and they will be felt by ordinary working people across the country."

Labour calls the Conservative claims, absolute lies and on the campaign trail, Jeremy Corbyn was trying to make it about the NHS.

Leader Jeremy Corbyn said:

"The Conservatives have underfunded the NHS and even the Conservatives dominated select committee in the House of Commons concedes that. At the moment the sustainability and transformation plans put forward by the Government are threatening A&E departments all over the country."

For the Liberal Democrats – it’s been the launch of their battle bus.

Leader Tim Farron said at the launch:

"There is a real theme developing in this Election which is Theresa May and the Conservatives taking Britain for granted."

As the politicians criss-cross the country they’ll be listening to pollsters about what issues will make up voters' minds in this election.
