Personnel From All Three Services Recognised In the New Year Honours

More than eleven-hundred people have been recognised in the New Year Honours.

Service personnel, from all three armed services, have been granted by Her Majesty the Queen in the annual New Year Honours list.

The oldest to receive honours are both 101, one of which is Lt Col Mordaunt Cohen, whose MBE is for services to Second World War education.

He joined the British Army after hearing the horrors of Nazi Germany from children who had arrived on the Kindertransport and fought in Burma from 1942 to 1945.

Others awarded include Vice Admiral Simon Woodcock who receives a Knighthood.

Dr Rachel Hawes is Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine at the RVI and Emergency Doctor with the Great North Air Ambulance Service receives an OBE.

She's been in the Army Reserve for the last 15 years.

In 2011 she deployed to Afghanistan from where she brought back invaluable experience which she was able to use in the NHS

Also awarded the OBE is WO1 Glenn Haughton of the Grenadier Guards, who has been a trustee of ABF the Soldiers' Charity since February 2014.

As the Army Sergeant Major, he is the only soldier (and the first) to be a member of the Army Board.

In honouring those who received honours this year, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

“Our Armed Forces are the best in the world, and the men and women receiving honours today have gone above and beyond the call of duty in order to keep this country safe. Their diligence and dedication in the line of service has been unwavering and ensured that Britain remains ready as we face intensifying threats at home and abroad.”

Also awarded a Knighthood is the author Michael Morpurgo, who is best known for War Horse, he said his Knighthood brought to mind the stories of the Knights of the Round Table at Camelot.

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Bee Gee Barry Gibb are among musicians being knighted in the New Year Honours list.

Strictly judge Darcey Bussell becomes a Dame and actor Hugh Laurie gets a CBE.

Soft Cell singer Marc Almond has accepted an OBE for services to arts and culture.
