A Forces News survey has revealed that 80% of readers think 16-years-old is old enough to join the British Army.

Less than 20 countries in the world still allow direct recruitment of 16-year-olds by their armed forces.

The UK is the only major military power, the only country in Europe and the only member of NATO to do this.

Earlier this week, a nationwide survey found 72% of people who expressed a view, believed that young people should not be able to join the Army until they are 18.

The survey said that around 10% of those people also said they believe the minimum age should actually be 21.

You can still have your say in our poll.

According to Child Soldiers International, one in three soldiers who join up at 16 or 17 leaves the Army after a few months, resulting in no job and little education.

In response to this, Forces News set up a poll to see what the readers think, where more than 800 votes have been cast.

80% said 16-years-old is old enough to join the military, 20% disagreed.

Commenting on Facebook, Elaine Rob said: "My son is currently 17 and ready to Pass out of AFC Harrogate next week.

"He joined at 16 and loves the Army.

"Not only has he been taught to be a soldier he has gained qualifications in Education but he’s also learnt Respect and has matured so much it amazes me."

Another person said: "16 year olds are still babies. I teach them.

"16 is definitely too young to be sent to combat. But it's not too young to join up and learn some skills."

Kevin Mottram said: "16 is only a number all depends on the maturity of the person."

Meanwhile, Allen Holmes said: "I think the earliest for training should be 18."

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson said: "Joining the Armed Forces gives young people the opportunity for a great career and we are proud of the opportunities we can offer to recruits.

"We take our duty of care for all personnel extremely seriously and ensure under-18s are not deployed on operations that would expose them to hostilities."
