Poppy Petals Cascade To Commemorate Battle Of Arras

An astonishing 46,000 poppy petals have been released from the top of the National Wallace Monument to commemorate the end of the battle of Arras.

Each petal represents a Scottish soldier who died or was wounded during the conflict.

The Battle of Arras began on 9th April 1917 with the objective of breaking through German lines near the city of Arras, on the Western Front.

It saw the First World War’s greatest concentration of Scottish battalions.

Of the 159,000 British casualties, nearly one third were Scottish troops.
