Type 23 Frigate On Display At Defence Showcase

The Royal Navy is offering a warship to help tackle people smugglers in the Mediterranean.

If approved by the EU, HMS Richmond could be used to board and seize vessels off the coast of Libya.

She's a Type 23 frigate and was launched back in 1993.

Based in Portsmouth, Richmond carries a Sea Eagle drone which provides 'over the horizon' surveillance cover.

The warship carries 185 personnel and a Lynx helicopter. It's also fitted with an anti-ship missile capable of striking targets more than 80 miles away

HMS Richmond was previously used to help combat piracy off the Somalia coast and to safeguard Britain's maritime trade routes in the South Atlantic

A similar Type 23 frigate is at this week's Defence Showcase Event (DSEI) at London's Excel Centre.
