Unprecedented UK military involvement for Trump's historic second three-day state visit

As US President Donald Trump starts his historic second state visit in the UK, it is one that is breaking military ceremonial records.

It will be the largest military ceremonial welcome for a state visit to the UK.

The UK Armed Forces are a long-standing ally of the US, so it was only fitting that they bring all the pomp and ceremony for the American leader's visit.

How does the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment prepare for a state visit?

Air Force One touched down at Stansted Airport with Donald Trump and First Lady Mrs Melania Trump on Tuesday, where they were welcomed by the RAF.

This second state visit will last three days and see a lot of military involvement – the largest to date.

What are the military doing?

This is the first time we will see a joint UK-US military flypast at a state visit, with F-35As flying alongside the UK's F-35s. Following the announcement in June that the RAF will receive 12 new F-35A aircraft, it marks a glimpse into the future for the UK.

Mr Trump's state visit will see the largest guard of honour ever in the UK at Windsor. The president will also be invited to inspect personnel.

It will also be the first time Beating Retreat has been performed during a state visit.

Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace will see a US military band taking part – the first time in history.

Who is taking part?

With such an important state visit to impress the US president, the military is using all its best efforts to make it a spectacle.

:: One hundred and twenty horses and 1,300 personnel will be involved, with 160 from the Royal Marines and Royal Navy, 1,000 from the British Army and 140 from the Royal Air Force.

:: The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment will escort the King and President Trump during the carriage procession.

:: As well as a flypast by the UK and US F-35s, the Red Arrows are also due to perform a flypast, weather permitting.

:: There will be gun salutes at Windsor Castle and the Tower of London.

:: Upon his arrival on Tuesday, Royal Air Force personnel from The King's Colour Squadron provided a welcoming line as President Trump and the First Lady disembarked Air Force One at Stansted Airport.

:: The State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry, pipers from The Scots Guards and the Duchess of Edinburgh's String Orchestra will perform at the state banquet on Wednesday.

:: Aviators – all new recruits – from RAF Halton will line the route for the president as he arrives at Chequers on Thursday.

:: The Army's Red Devils Parachute Display Team will perform an air display, again weather dependent.

:: Two RAF Pipers will perform at Chequers.

:: The state visit will conclude with performances by the Duchess of Edinburgh's String Orchestra and The Band of the Welsh Guards at Lancaster House.
