An unexploded device has been detonated in a controlled explosion by Royal Navy divers.

According to BBC, the item was found on a beach at Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk, on Tuesday.

HM Coastguard at Humber then called in the Joint Services Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.

The coastguard spokesman told the Eastern Daily Press:

“It must have been on the bed for a considerable amount of time and therefore the possibility of it going off are quite slim."

The device, probably from the Second World War, was then destroyed by a controlled explosion on Thursday morning.

The discovery prompted HM Coastguard Gorleston to post a message on Facebook to warn passersby:

"The public are advised to stay clear of any similar objects that may be found on the beaches as they are extremely unstable and dangerous."
