Russian Airstrikes Take Out Over 300 Islamic State Militants
The Russian military has announced that the air strikes it carried out in eastern Syria this week have killed more than 300 so-called Islamic State (IS) militants.
Moscow has been a major backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, whose troops have been advancing in the Eastern corner of Syria under the cover of Russian airstrikes.
At the same time, Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces are also advancing on IS, backed by the US-led coalition.
In a statement this morning, Russia’s Defence Ministry said that its air strikes just outside the Eastern Province of Deir el-Zour, on the bank of the Euphrates River, killed around 304 IS fighters, injuring a further 200.
The ministry also claimed that the air strikes destroyed an IS training centre, artillery positions, tanks and ammunition depots.
