A cannon from one of the Royal Navy's most infamous ships is up for auction.

The 1,320lbs gun from The Bounty has been sitting on the front lawn of a country house in Scotland.

HMS Bounty, also known as HM Armed Vessel Bounty, was on a mission to collect plants from around the West Indies in 1789.

During the voyage relations between Captain William Bligh and his crew deteriorated.

The mutineers, led by the ship’s mate Fletcher Christian, commandeered the Bounty and cast Bligh and his supporters adrift.

The mutineers settled on Pitcairn Island in the Pacific where they burned the ship.

The events on the ship have been dramatised in five films with a replica being built in 1960 for 'Mutiny on the Bounty'.

The replica sank off the US east coast during a hurricane in 2012.

The cannon for sale was salvaged from the vessel and passed through various hands over the centuries before it ended up in the town of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway.

A spokesperson for auctioneers Thomson Roddick is reported to be confident that the cannon will sell for around £500,000 when it goes under the hammer on June 9th.
