SAS Walter Mitty Conman Jailed For Fraud

A divorced man who conned women into relationships by pretending to be an elite soldier has been jailed for 16 months.

Darren McCue admitted he pretended to be an elite soldier to fool women into relationships.

The 44-year-old divorcee’s liesunravelled when his latest victim found out his real name and tracked down other women who had been duped by his fake army record.

Darren McCue had cultivated a relationship with 39-year-old single mother Rachael Moultrie after meeting on a dating site in 2014 by boasting of his exploits as a former paratrooper and member of the SAS.

He claimed to have dropped out a plane using a broken parachute and eating worms to survive in Borneo.

Calling himself 'Dan Mitchell', the conman said he was as a divorced tattoo artist and father of twin 19-year-old girls.

McCue moved into the Moultrie’s home in 2015 but was thrown out five months later after Rachael's eldest daughter spotted messages on his phone from a dating site.

After finding paperwork addressed to 'McCue' Rachael then tracked down his former wife of 13 years who confirmed his real name and that he had never been in the Army and didn't have any children.

A spokesman for the MoD confirmed it had no record of him

When confronted in 2016, before he was jailed, McCue admitted lying to four women.

McCue admitted fraud by dishonestly making a representation to make a gain or cause loss to Rachael.

Over the course the year-long relationship McCue had convinced Rachael to take out a series of loans to the sum of £19,000 to buy a car and settle debts.

He has been sentenced to 16 months in jail at Cardiff Crown Court and given a restraining order banning him from contacting Rachael Moultrie.
