A Second World War veteran has met and thanked the ‘charming’ school boy who donated his birthday money to charity.

RAF Benevolent received an unexpected donation after 6-year-old Henry Conway decided to donate £25 which had been part of his birthday present.

Henry had been moved by the RAF television advert ‘Show Your Pride’, which featured military veterans including Battle of Britain pilot Stan Hartill.

Hearing the news, Stan decided to thank Henry personally by inviting him to his home where Stan went on to tell stories of his service.

Stan described Henry as a, “very charming little boy”.

Stan added: “He’s a very intelligent little boy and it’s been quite a pleasure meeting him today.

“I was deeply moved to hear about Henry’s donation after seeing me on the TV, so to be able to thank him personally is simply wonderful!”

Henry also enjoyed their meeting, he said:

"It was really fun to meet the man off the telly. He told me about the war and the Spitfires. I'd like to be a hero like Stan when I'm older."

Stan joined the Royal Air Force when he was just 19 years old becoming an airframe fitter.

RAF Benevolent supported the war veteran when he was struggling to pay the maintenance charges on his flat. The help meant that retired Stan didn’t have to move from his own home.
