Soldier Becomes First Female Beefeater In 10 Years
A Lancashire soldier has become only the second woman to be made a Beefeater at the Tower of London.
Amanda Clark is the newest Yeoman of the Guard, having previously served with the Royal Logistics Corps for 22 years.
Clark has completed tours in Germany, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and the Falkland Islands and said:
"It didn't really hit me until the first time I wore the uniform and realised I am now part of the Tower's history."
The first female Beefeater was Moira Cameron, who held the position in 2007.
The Beefeater is a post that is believed to date back to 1485.
To be able to hold the position applicants must have served at least 22 years in the armed forces, hold the long service and good conduct medal and have reached the level of Warrant Officer.
Sgt Maj Clark's duties will involve a traditional ceremonial role and she will lead tours around the tower.
Her first challenge is to prepare for the Ceremony of the Keys - a closing ceremony which has taken place every night without fail for at least 700 years.
