Taliban Attack On Afghan Military Kills Over 100 Personnel

Balkh

The Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, has flown to the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif to visit troops wounded in a Taliban attack on a military base there on Friday.

The Afghan military says Taliban fighters wore army uniforms to carry out an attack on a military base in the north of the country, in which more than a hundred people died.

One soldier said the attackers fired indiscriminately from army trucks.

They targeted soldiers leaving a Mosque after Friday prayers near the city of Mazar-e Sharif.

The attack is thought to be one of the worst ever assaults on the military.

Two insurgents carried out suicide attacks and eight other attackers were killed in the battle.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email.
