Afghan officials say the Taliban have carried out two suicide car bombings at an army camp in the southern Kandahar province, after several hours of fighting.

The Taliban has claimed the attack on the Afghan National Army base in the Maiwand district of Kandahar.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Daulat Waziri confirmed the incident that happened late Wednesday night, but declined to comment on the number of casualties.

However local media, TOLO News, has reported that the attack killed as many as 40 Afghan soldiers.

They report the suicide attackers used Humvees in the bombing.

Speaking earlier about the wave of attacks by Taliban across the country this week, Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister, Murad Ali Murad, called the onslaught the “biggest terrorist attack this year.”
