Tastes Of Home For Last British Base In Germany

Personnel at the last British base set to stay open in Germany after the withdrawal of UK troops have been flocking to its new shop.

The new venture involving NAAFI has already proved popular with personnel at the remote base, as a way to enjoy a taste of home.

“It saves me bringing it back when I do trips to the UK so it’s good”

The Regimental Quartermaster of Ayrshire Barracks, Sergeant Lofty Worboys, says the facility will help bring civilian and military personnel closer together.

“We get to see people from other parts of the camp that we normally wouldn’t see on a daily basis”

Ayrshire Barracks is home to more than 1,000 armoured and support vehicles, which are kept in climate-controlled warehouses ready to be issued to units deploying on major exercises or operations.

The vast site at Mönchengladbach in North Rhein-Westphalia is currently the British Army's main armoured vehicle depot.

Ayrshire Barracks is expected to remain in service for at least four years after the withdrawal of the last UK combat units from Germany in 2019.
