Three Finnish soldiers have been killed after a train and an off-road military vehicle crashed in Finland, police have confirmed.

The FNB news agency reports that eight people were also injured in the crash in Southern Finland, around 53 miles south-west of Helsinki.

Four fatalities have been confirmed, one being a passenger on the train.

Local press said the crash took place around 8am this morning and that the accident had occurred at a level crossing.

Railway traffic monitor Reima Roisko said:

"A passenger train from Karis to Hanko collided with a vehicle at the level crossing. There were several people injured."

Finland's defence minister Jussi Niinisto tweeted that Thursday "had started with grim news" and "I feel grief".
