Malcolm Williams

Tributes have been paid after the death of a retired Royal Navy officer.

Commodore Malcolm Williams, 69, died after a traffic collision on the A3(M) involving two cars and a lorry at junction 3 near Waterlooville, Hampshire, on Tuesday 20 April.

As well as his 31-year Navy career, Cdre Williams had also been Chief Executive of the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society in Chichester, a maritime charity.

His family described him as "a man of principle, fortitude and compassion and a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother".

"Both his naval career and his subsequent work were immensely important to him," their tribute said.

"He will be missed by those that had the privilege to know him."

Cdre Williams served in the Falklands War as Operations Officer on HMS Ambuscade.

He was also Commanding Officer of three Royal Navy vessels, HMS Andromeda, HMS Scylla and HMS Fearless, the latter during a 1997 deployment for the handover of Hong Kong.

The retired officer was later made a CBE for his work in co-ordinating the joint response to crises in Sierra Leone, Kosovo and humanitarian responses to natural disasters in Mozambique and Honduras.

Police have asked for anyone who witnessed the collision or with dash-cam footage of last Tuesday's incident to call 101, quoting the reference 44210149298.
