Cyprus: UK military's last remaining search and rescue squadron celebrates half-century

The RAF's 84 Squadron has marked its 50th anniversary of operations in Cyprus.

Based at RAF Akrotiri, its personnel have conducted non-stop flying missions on the island since 1972 – winching people to safety and fighting fierce local fires – as the last remaining search and rescue squadron in the UK military.

Personnel from 84 Squadron, past and present, gathered to mark the milestone with all three of the squadron's Griffin helicopters touring the island in an impressive formation flight.

The flight included stops at British bases across the island and areas where they have previously carried out vital search and rescue operations.

And the flypast was a chance for all to "hoot and roar for 84", as well as for everyone connected with the squadron to send a message of appreciation.
