An RAF veteran has died in a "tragic accident" at Heckington Windmill, according to its operators.

Mr Lett, who served with the RAF for 24 years as an aircraft technician, was a volunteer engineer at the windmill in Lincolnshire.

According to the BBC, it is believed he suffered a head injury after he got some of his clothing stuck in an engine, which is used to power grindstones.

Mill volunteers paid tribute to Mr Lett in a Facebook post;

"Heckington Windmill suffered a very sad loss today when engineering volunteer Pete Lett died after a tragic accident at the mill.

"Pete will be missed enormously for his enthusiasm and experience and most of all his kind and good nature.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and daughters."

Heckington Mill was originally built in 1830 and is the only eight-sailed tower windmill in the UK still to work.
