WATCH: Daredevil Jetmen Soar Alongside French Display Team

The French Air Force display team have been joined by jetpack flyers in what's said to be a world first.

One wrong move could have spelled disaster as the stuntmen, from Jetman Dubai, needed to fly as close as five metres from the planes.

Former Swiss Air Force fighter pilot Yves Rossy was the pioneering force behind the individual jet-powered wingsuit.

The stunt itself involved eight Alpha Jets, the three Jetmen - Yves Rossy, Vincent Reffet and Fred Fugen - and two helicopters to drop them off.

The Jetmen can fly up to 150 knots (about 170 mph) although they flew 145 knots in this stunt to allow them the flexibility and precision required to navigate.

Pilot Fred Fugen said:

We got in contact with the director of the Patrouille de France. The good thing is that he used to be a skydiver, he has a true passion for freefall and flying in general, so he knew quite a bit about the Jetman project already.

"We had two flying days with the planes: the first day we had two flights with two Alpha Jets and then the second day we did two flights with the whole Patrouille de France. When we did the first tests, mainly to test the speeds, he was in the planes, he was flying one."

In 2015 the team swapped the comfort of the cockpit for the chance to fly with an Airbus A380 belonging to the Emirates Airline.

The flight was the culmination of a three-month project and was achieved with the Airbus aircraft being flown at 4,000ft in a meticulously planned holding pattern.
