Two Second World War machine guns have been handed into the Metropolitan police during the second week of the 'National Gun Surrender'.

A nationwide scheme set to reduce the number of guns which lets people anonymously hand in illegal firearms and ammunition without prosecution has seen almost 250 firearms handed in.

The two World War Two weapons were deactivated and are among five automatic guns surrendered in the last week, along with 31 shotguns, 11 pistols, 10 handguns, nine revolvers and six rifles.

Also, some 3,859 rounds of ammunition were also given over, as well as 48 air weapons.

Detective Superintendent Mike Balcombe, of the Met's Trident and Area Crime Command, said:

"We are very pleased with the public response to the first week of the gun surrender.

It’s unsure what will happen to the Second World War machine guns.

The national gun surrender drive was launched on November 13th and ends on Sunday.

If anyone has any information about someone who they believe is in possession of an illegal gun, they can ring police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
