WWII Bomb Detonated In English Channel

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a Second World War bomb after it was dislodged from the seabed.
The 1,102lb bomb was detonated in open water about 1.5 miles east of the Isle of Wight.
However, the explosion was so small Royal Navy experts didn't even see it.
They carried out the detonation at 0700 this morning but there was no water plume so they believed it had been unsuccessful.
Last year saw a much more impressive explosion after a 1,500lb German mine was discovered...
Divers returned with the intention of blowing it up again but the bomb was found to have already exploded.
It had been towed out to sea after it was found in Portsmouth Harbour.
The bomb was uncovered during dredging works amid preparations for the arrival of the Navy’s new aircraft carrier the HMS Queen Elizabeth next spring.
The discovery led to the evacuation of shops and restaurants at the Gunwharf Quays retail and leisure complex.
A Second World War torpedo was also found earlier this month in the area and exploded at sea.
