British Army gun salutes across the UK have celebrated the first anniversary of the King and Queen's Coronation.

At noon the soldiers and guns of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery delivered a 41-gun royal salute at Green Park.

Then at 1 pm, the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) fired a 62-gun royal salute at the Tower of London.

Both regiments were responsible for firing the Coronation Guns to signal the exact moment the Crown touched the King's head during the Coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey one year ago.

At Green Park the soldiers of King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery rode out from their forward mounting base in central London to position their guns for the salute.

The gunners wore a distinctive dress uniform which included gold braided jackets and busby hats.

Their guns are the regiment's Colours - the equivalent of an infantry regiment's ceremonial flag with battle honours - and so were afforded due respect throughout the route.

Seventy-one horses pulled six First World War-era 13-pounder field guns over the grass into position for the royal salute beside six ammunition boxes.

The guns were quickly detached, with the horses escorted to a safe area, then following the word of command, each of the six guns fired blank artillery rounds at 10-second intervals until 41 shots had been fired.

Following this, the horses and riders collected the guns and escorted them back through London to their temporary barracks.

Throughout, The Band of the Irish Guards provided musical accompaniment around the salute.

At precisely 1pm at the Tower of London, on the word of command, a 62-gun royal salute was fired.

Three 105mm light artillery guns were drawn by the HAC's Pinzgauer vehicles through the city, from Armoury House in Artillery Gardens to the Tower of London.

The guns were placed into position on Tower Wharf facing the River Thames by Army Reserve soldiers from the HAC.

Many of the soldiers involved have now returned to their civilian jobs in the City, their dual role as Army Reservists complete.

Gun salutes also took place across the UK at Edinburgh Castle, Cardiff Castle and Hillsborough Castle in County Down.

Sailors from His Majesty's Naval Base Devonport in Plymouth celebrated with a 21-gun salute from the Quarterdeck at HMS Drake.

Also, at York's Museum Gardens, a 21-gun royal salute was fired by a 4th Regiment Royal Artillery saluting troop of three light guns, with music provided by the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

Every element of the military was represented when two processions accompanied the King and Queen to and from Westminster Abbey, where the coronation service took place, with an RAF flypast concluding the official events.

More than 9,000 members of the UK Armed Forces were deployed in ceremonial and supporting roles for the coronation.

Around 7,000 personnel were on ceremonial duties, which included:

  • More than 1,000 personnel lining the streets
  • Around 200 personnel participating in the King's Procession to Westminster Abbey
  • Around 4,000 personnel participating in the Coronation Procession from Westminster Abbey
  • Around 200 personnel providing the Guard of Honour at Buckingham Palace
  • More than 400 personnel performing gun salutes across the UK
  • Around 200 personnel carrying Standards, Colours, Guidons or Truncheon
