The Duchess of Edinburgh looked like a regular soldier as sparks flew during her visit to two battalions of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in Tidworth, Wiltshire.

REME's Colonel-in-Chief wore a protective visor and blue overalls to weld during a visit with 6 Armoured Close Support Battalion REME.

While there, she learned about the work they do to maintain and repair the British Army's armoured vehicles and equipment.

What is the Colonel-in-Chief? The Duchess of Edinburgh's role explained

The Duchess became the Colonel-in-Chief of the REME in 2022 - a role held by her father-in-law, the Duke of Edinburgh, for more than 50 years.

The ceremonial role involves supporting the morale of the soldiers, engaging with them during official visits and promoting the regiment's history and traditions.

In addition, she attends an annual competition that sees her affiliated regiments and corps from the UK and Canada compete against each other in a series of challenges.
