Watch: Queen meets family of 'unbelievable' Guardsman posthumously awarded Victoria Cross

Queen Camilla has paid tribute to a Grenadier Guardsman who was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross for bravery under fire in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal James Ashworth, 23, was killed in action against insurgent sharpshooters during an operation in Helmand province, Afghanistan in 2012.

His parents, Duane and Caroline, met the Queen to discuss their son's bravery, and they spoke of the kindness she showed his memory.

Speaking about the actions of LCpl Ashworth, recognised posthumously with the British Armed Forces' highest military decoration, Queen Camilla told his parents: "You must be so proud, for somebody to be awarded the Victoria Cross is something else.

"It's unbelievable, I read his citation and couldn't believe it."

His citation read: "His total disregard for his own safety in ensuring that the last grenade was posted accurately was the gallant last action of a soldier who had willingly placed himself in the line of fire on numerous occasions earlier in the attack.

"This supremely courageous and inspiring action deserves the highest recognition."

The Queen has served as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards since December 2022 and is a great supporter of the Colonel's fund which supports Grenadiers who have suffered serious physical or mental injury and their close families.

Mr Ashworth said: "We didn't really need to tell her anything, she was already informed and had read his citation prior to coming down to see us.

"As I say, she was very, I wouldn't say humble, but very proud of what he's done and what he's achieved, and his bravery."

Mrs Ashworth added: "She was absolutely amazing, and she was so warm, as well, with everything she said, and she was very kind."

The meeting was conducted during a reception, hosted by Her Majesty at Clarence House for military families supported by the regiment's charity, the Colonel's Fund.

The Colonel's Fund supports Grenadiers who have suffered a serious physical or mental injury, and their close families.
