The Admiral of the Russian Black Sea Fleet has been dismissed from his position following the loss of several warships under his command.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Admiral Viktor Sokolov was removed from his post due to his failures in the role.

"On 15 February 2024, Russian pro-war commentators reported that the commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Viktor Sokolov, had been removed from his post," the MOD said in its latest intelligence update.

"Drawing similarities with his predecessor, Igor Osipov, this is highly likely to be a result of Ukraine's success in sinking various ships under his command. Sokolov's leadership style may have also played a role in his dismissal.

"Although not confirmed by the Russian ministry of defence, Solokov has likely been replaced by his now former deputy, Vice Admiral Sergei Pinchuk, as acting commander until an internal investigation of the 15 February 2024 sinking of the Ropucha-class Caesar Kunikov landing ship is concluded."

This year, Russia has suffered the loss of several ships including the Caesar Kunikov, an amphibious assault vessel, and the missile corvette Ivanovets.

Beginning his tenure in August 2022, Admiral Sokolov has been blamed for a series of high-profile losses within the fleet.

Drone footage has circulated online showing the destruction of several vessels being attacked in the Black Sea.
