Back To Basics For Soldiers On Ex Lion Sun

In their day job, the bombardiers of Gibraltar Battery Royal Artillery operate the British Army’s range of small surveillance aircraft.

However, this month they are on exercise in Cyprus refreshing their basic infantry skills. WO2 Katherine Russell, 22 Battery, Royal Artillery said:

"We call it 'returning to contingency'. We're trying to stop what we call the Herrick-isms.

"Due to Herrick we lived in FOB locations in very small detachments and we started operating in very unique ways.

"What we're trying to do now is come back to the absolute basics. How to feed yourself, how to wash yourself, how to attack small groups of enemy..."

Simon Newton joined them on Exercise Lion Sun.
