British Army Medic Feels "Abandoned" By The MOD
A former senior Army medic once awarded the Royal Red Cross is accusing the Ministry of Defence (MOD) of paying 'lip service' to mental health issues.
Lt Col Jan Pilgrim, once nicknamed ‘Florence of Arabia’ and 'The Angel of Basra' by newspapers, says she felt abandoned when her mental health deteriorated.
Since speaking out, she says she's been inundated with people thanking her for raising the issue. She said:
"If the pathway for physical injury is so good, why does the pathway for mental health not even exist?... It would be lovely if we could have somewhere like Headley Court but that's not going to happen."
The MOD denies letting her and other veterans down. In statement they said:
"The government is absolutely committed to the mental health of our Armed Forces.
"Where problems arise, a wide range of best practise treatments are available.
"We work closely with other government departments and agencies so there is continued effective treatment and support on transition to civilian life."
