Defence Secretary John Healey has visited British troops on Nato's eastern flank in Estonia during his tour across Europe, thanking them for their bravery in the face of potential Russian aggression.

Mr Healey made his first official visits to France, Germany, Poland and Estonia in his new role, during which he also signed an agreement strengthening a new UK-German defence relationship.

The Ministry of Defence said he spoke to UK personnel stationed in Tapa to thank them for their continued dedication to making Britain secure at home and strong abroad.

Mr Healey said: "It was most important for me to be here with you, and the reason for that is, you here are the front line of Nato and our eastern flank.

"You here provide the protection for all of our Nato allies.

"And you help us as a nation and as an alliance stand tall in the face of Putin’s aggression."

During his 48-hour whistlestop tour, Mr Healey also found time to meet RAF Regiment gunners and British soldiers assisting the French security services in Paris.

The work of the Armed Forces will be instrumental in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Estonia borders Russia to the east and since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, British troops have stood as a deterrent against further aggression in Europe.
