The German Officer Who Trained British Soldiers in WW1

Colonel Leonard Messel was a seasoned soldier who trained British men to prepare them to fight in the Great War. Despite this Colonel Messel wasn't allowed to fight due to German heritage, so instead spent his time training troops. He also helped them however he could by being a prolific letter writer keeping in touch with the men and their families.

Nymans in West Sussex has opened a new display of these letters. Tim Cooper went to find out more.
