PM Plans To Reduce Legal Claims Against Troops

The Prime Minister has told Forces TV she hopes to announce new measures that will reduce the amount of legal claims against British troops within days.

Theresa May made the announcement while making her first visit to a military unit as PM.

She met soldiers and their families from the 1st Battalion the Mercian Regiment at Bulford Camp in Wiltshire.

The comments come after concerns were raised over the “industrial scale” of claims lodged with the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT) which is investigating claims of abuse by British forces in Iraq.

A second investigation is also underway relating to claims concerning UK troops' behaviour in Afghanistan.

It comes after the British Army was accused of betraying “its finest people” by a serviceman who was facing prosecution over the death of an Iraqi teenager.

The soldier said the Army had abandoned its troops to be hounded over abuse claims.

However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he backs the investigations.
